Vace Italian Deli

The majority of restaurant reviews on DC City Blog focus on hot new places that open up in the area – places worth our time and effort to write about.  Every so often however, there comes a takeout place that is so good it becomes DC City Blog-worthy. Vace is an Italian Deli and Pizzeria located at 3315 Connecticut Ave. in Cleveland Park. It is possible that they have the best pizza in DC – definitely the best Pizza takeout place in DC.

Cost – $

Service – C
It isn’t really a restaurant but I guess the people working at the counter do a decent job.  If only they could wipe the angry look off their faces.  Maybe people should start tipping them more.

Food – A
I like the pizza here better than the pizza at 2 Amys or Pizzeria Paradiso. It is that good.  Actually I have traveled through Italy and also spend copious amounts of time in New York and Chicago and I think pizza from Vace can go toe-to-toe with pizza from anywhere else in the world.  As a matter of fact there sandwiches are also delicious.

Decor – NA
Well it is sort of a small supermarket / takeout place so let’s just say it is a couple of steps below the Mandarin Oriental.

Feel – C
I sort of wish they handled customers more efficiently.  I’ve sat in line for 20 minutes before – and that was with 2 people in front of me.  At any rate, the pizza is good enough that they can take their sweet ass time but let me recommend calling in ahead of time for your order so it is ready when you get there.

What’s the Buzz:

December 2, 2004 – Vace (Drift Reality) – Vace, located at 3315 Connecticut Ave in Cleveland Park, has the best pizza for miles. The ingredients are extremely fresh and the slices are a perfect size. Compared to the crap that you get in Adams Morgan, Vace’s slices are on another level. Granted, you probably couldn’t wrap Vace’s slices around you like a cape in case you were cold like you could with slices from Adams Morgan, but who the hell would do something disgusting like that anyway? I think this review is somewhat misleading, although it might decrease traffic at Vace, so I’m not complaining.

In my experience, Vace is as close as D.C. comes to a good, solid Italian deli/meateria. Not only can you get awesome sandwiches and other dishes on the spot; they have fridges full of homemade pasta and other specialties that you can take home to enjoy. In my opinion, Vace is an unqualified A.

If they serve homemade pasta then they get an A in my book. So many deli places are closing down because they try to cut down on costs by serving frozen food that they just heat up to order. I operate a Fort Lauderdale catering business and it seems to me that the way to get customers is with unique and quality food that is cooked to order.

[…] Vace Italian Deli – There are a few different locations but the one I frequent is in Cleveland Park.  There isn’t a place to sit but they do slices and pies for carry out so if you’re in the neighborhood drop by.  Vace offers some of the freshest ingredients in their pizza. […]
