Top-seeded Misty May-Treanor, Nicole Branagh headline women’s field as AVP returns to Virginia Beach for AVP NIVEA Tour Virginia Beach Open

(AVP NIVEA Tour via DC City Blog) – Two-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor and teammate Nicole Branagh will attempt to get back to their winning ways as the top-seeded women’s team in this weekend’s AVP NIVEA Tour Virginia Beach Open Presented by Twinlab.

The pair won the season-opening stop in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but came up short in subsequent California events in Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach. They headline a deep women’s field that includes the other two teams to win a title this season, second-seeded Jennifer Kessy and April Ross and fourth-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan.

John Hyden and Sean Scott are the No. 1 seed on the men’s side. They are coming off a runner-up finish at the Tour’s last stop two weeks ago in Huntington Beach. Scott placed third with then-teammate Albert Hannemann when the AVP last came to Virginia Beach in 2001.

The main draw for the Virginia Beach Open starts with both top-seeded teams in action Saturday at 9 a.m. and runs through Sunday at 4th Street along the Oceanfront. General admission tickets are free, courtesy of the partnership between the AVP and Twinlab. Tickets for courtside seating and suites are available on-site or at www.avp.com.
On Friday, eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams earned the right to play in the Main Draw by advancing through an open qualifier.

The men’s teams to advance through Friday’s 47-team qualifier included Reuben Danley/Jason Wight, Ihor Akinshyn/Brian Tillman, Brook Billings/Dave McKienzie, Roger Corbitt/Justin Phipps, Lucas Black/Mike Nelson, Matt Heagy/Travis Schoonover, Matt Davis/Kevin Gregan, and Gregory Hunter/Mat Ogin.

The women’s teams of Kelly Schumacher/Alicia Zamparelli, Gretchen Duffner/Carol Hamilton, Mariko Coverdale/Chelsea Hayes, Diane Copenhagen/Jaimi Gregory, Kim DiCello/Juliana Evens, Abby Georgy/Kendra Van Zwieten, Jennifer Corral/JoAnna Papageorgiou, and Summer Ross/Petia Yanchulova made it through Friday’s 26-team qualifier.
