Rocket Bar

It’s been a little while since we at DC City Blog reviewed a bar so it was fortunate that a work function took  me to Rocket Bar this past week.  Like most other cities, DC has some pretty clear social divisions that manifest in the different venue circuits that people in DC choose.  Rocket Bar is clearly on the same circuit as other popular bar venues in DC like Lucky Bar and the Big Hunt.

Cost – $

Service – B
The service is pretty straight-up at Rocket Bar.  I ordered a round of drinks and was served in a matter of minutes.

Food – ?

Decor – C
To be completely honest, I don’t really think there was anything that stood out about the design of Rocket Bar apart from the pictures of Rockets on the wall.

Feel – C
Rocket Bar should be on the list of stuff white people like.  As you can tell by the amount of effort I have just put into this review, Rocket Bar isn’t my favorite place in the world.  If you are in that crowd then I can see why you might want to visit the venue and I’m hoping someone comments on this review and helps me understand what the appeal to the place is.

Rocket Bar is located at 717 7th St.  They can be reached at (202) 628-7665.

Only appeal to Rocket Bar is the location — probably the most “basic” place to grab a few drinks right before or after a game or concert at the Verizon Center, a movie at Gallery Place or if you are already down in that area shopping or something. Places like FADO and RFD are kind of weak unless you go there with a big group and the other more “loungey” bars in that hood are a little much for just grabbing a few cocktails (and also not quite as conveniently located at spitting distance from the other attractions I mentioned).

Rocket bar is good. It’s not a place to be seen, but I think that’s fine. It just offers reasonably priced drinks in a relaxed environment, and you can also play various games. Its proximity to Verizon is definitely one of the main draws, but Chinatown needs a place like this.

I would tend to compare it more to Buffalo Billiards rather than Lucky Bar or Big Hunt, but I think it is on a similar circuit as you say. I cut across all categories as a preppy white boy… I enjoy most types of venues except maybe hipster ones since they seem to not want me there

Chinatown definitely needs another “big” bar though. Maybe a huge sports bar that’s less cheesy than ESPN zone.
