Sixteen dancers from Citydance’s Conservatory have been invited to perform in King In Our Midst, the National Cathedral’s annual celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16 at 2pm. The annual event pays tribute to King, through service projects, interfaith dialogue, and performances that represent Washington’s rich musical and dance heritage.

“Dr. King asked us to be guardians of people, and of truth and beauty and justice. CityDance will honor these ideals through a presentation that is serene, yet powerful and that reflects the peaceful determination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his struggles for all of us to rise above the mundane and embrace the highest principles of truth,” said Lorraine Spiegler, CityDance’s Artistic Director of Studio Education.

Under Ms. Spiegler’s direction, the CityDance Conservatory dancers will perform with singers from School Without Walls Senior High School Concert Choir, which is led by Ms. Joan Moten. The piece will be performed to Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World,” with original choreography by Zac Norten. The dancers performing are Marissa Ajamian, Kelsey Anderson, Taryn Bailey, Gabby David, Alexandra Grayson, Samara Green, Alona Guseva, Kiara Hill, Colleen Hoerle, Katie Koegel, Matthew McLaughlin, Dana Pajarillaga, Kevin Pajarillaga, Julia Schwalb, Ginna Semmes and Adin Walker.

Spiegler also commented, “CityDance’s participation in the National Cathedral King In Our Midst program is our recognition and celebration of Dr. King’s life and mission to achieve equality and justice for all, is one with which we feel centrally aligned, as we have a truly integrated student body–socio-economically, racially and internationally.”

In addition to CityDance, this year, featured groups such as Malcolm X Dancers & Drummers, St. Augustine Gospel Choir, poet Tony Keith, Urban Nation H.I.P.—H.O.P. Choir, and WPAS Children of the Gospel Choir, will also “rock the nave” from 2 to 4 pm.

The Cathedral’s yearly celebration of King’s legacy has expanded over the years to include service projects and interfaith dialogue around the city during the first half of the day that culminate in the afternoon musical event. This event comes nearly 43 years after Dr. King preached what would be his last Sunday sermon from the Cathedral’s Canterbury Pulpit. He was killed in Memphis only four days later.

People from all walks of life will come together to sing, dance and celebrate the legacy of faith and service left by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Short interfaith reflections will be offered in several faith traditions by Buddhist, Jewish and Christian participants during the program.

The afternoon performance will be free and open to the public; attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable canned food item or a new children’s book for admittance. A coat and winter clothing drive is also planned.

To find out more visit: www.citydance.net, or go to the National Cathedral’s event page: http://www.nationalcathedral.org/ celebrate

Washington, DC’s PostClassical Ensemble is kicking off the 2011-12 performance season with three exciting new ventures: nationwide broadcasts on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, a groundbreaking collaboration with pianist Jeremy Denk, and the launch of PostClassical Underground, a cabaret-style showcase of post-classical artists in one of DC’s most historic jazz nightclubs, the Bohemian Caverns.

It all starts on September 9, 10 and 11 with three national Sirius/XM Satellite Radio broadcasts of the music of George Gershwin as its never been heard before, featuring long-time PostClassical collaborator Genadi Zagor on piano, performing his singular interpretations of Gershwin – with thundering improvisation!

Genadi Zagor then performs live at the Bohemian Caverns on Thursday, September 22, kicking off the PostClassical Underground series with an intimate all-Gershwin program, celebrating the composer’s 113th birthday. (Tickets $20/25 at www.bohemiancaverns.com)

The 2011-12 season is PostClassical’s most ambitious yet, filled with exciting collaborations and world-premiere projects including:

A 3-day exploration of the music of Charles Ives with acclaimed pianist Jeremy Denk and baritone William Sharp at Strathmore.

A world-premiere flamenco production with legendary Spanish cantaora Esperanza Fernandez at Georgetown and the National Gallery of Art.

A wildly unexpected take on the music of Franz Schubert with bass trombone virtuoso David Taylor at Georgetown and the National Gallery of Art.

Four Sirius/XM national broadcasts.

Two additional installations of PostClassical Underground combining Chinese folksong, jazz repertoire and new works with Min-Xiao Fen and The David Taylor Trio featuring jazz luminary Kenny Drew, Jr.

“Jeremy Denk is also a pianist who breaks the mold, both in terms of repertoire and interpretation, and we’re thrilled to have his participation in the Ives Project. The flamenco singer Esperanza Fernandez is a legend in her native Spain. We’re introducing her to audiences in the United States in collaboration with the master choreographer Igal Perry, who seamlessly integrates a wide range of styles. The talents of baritone William Sharp and the legendary trombonist David Taylor are well known to our audiences here in D.C. We’re looking forward to sharing their exceptional gifts with even more concert-goers this season.”

From its inception in 2003, the Ensemble has concentrated on producing intensive, collaborative “immersion” experiences contextualizing music with film, dance and theater. Its programs question pre-conceived notions, and champion artists and compositions that expand the boundaries of what is traditionally considered to be “classical music”.

This is PostClassical Ensemble’s first full season linked to a multi-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supporting ongoing collaborations with major cultural and educational institutions, including Strathmore, Georgetown University, and the National Gallery of Art.

Tickets for PostClassical Underground at www.bohemiancaverns.com

Tickets for “The Ives Project” with Jeremy Denk at www.strathmore.org.

Argan oil from Morocco, twice-roasted seaweed from Korea, chunky papaya jam from Senegal and gluten-free pasta from Italy will be among the 180,000 foods from around the world on display at the Summer Fancy Food Show in Washington, D.C.

The show is the largest marketplace for specialty foods and beverages in North America. It will take place July 10 – 12, 2011, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

New international exhibitors at the Summer Show include Wales, Kenya, Botswana and Bulgaria. Egypt, Israel, India and Russia are also set to display their culinary treasures. Countries back with bigger exhibits than at last year’s Summer Fancy Food Show include Barbados, Tunisia, Peru, Sri Lanka, Greece, Morocco, China and France.

Over all, food artisans and entrepreneurs from some 80 countries and regions will fill the exhibit halls with their nation’s gastronomic offerings of spices, confections, teas, vinegars, oils, cheese, yogurts, natural products and new twists on ethnic flavors.

The Italian Trade Commission, the show’s largest international exhibitor, plans gelato-making demonstrations, tastings of wine, fresh-pressed juices, cheese and olive oil. Korea will create a pop-up restaurant run by Korean-born Chef Akira Back from Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Exhibitors from Jamaica will feature new twists on jerk seasonings.

“We’ve had strong demand from around the world to participate at our Summer Fancy Food Show this year. One third of our exhibit space will be devoted to the latest in international foods and flavors,” says Ann Daw, president of the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade, Inc. (NASFT), the show’s owner. “We’re on track for a great show.”

A complete list of exhibitors is available at www.specialtyfood.com/fancy-food-show/exhibitor-list/. For exhibitor news, go to www.specialtyfood.com/exhibitornews.

About the NASFT

(Kal Rieman via DC City Blog) – Women’s ready-to-wear clothing designer, KAL RIEMAN, will be showcasing its Fall/Winter 2011 collection with its first trunk show in Washington, DC on May 17 from 5:00pm-9:00pm. To be held at the Studio Gallery in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle. With a focus on elegance and straightforward tailoring, the collection uses a men’s wear influence to create strong utilitarian looks for modern women.

Taking an unconventional path into fashion, designer Cally Rieman graduated from Denison University with a degree in East Asian Studies and Political Science. Then Cally began a four-year career in Finance before attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Now, having worked with designers such as Rubin Chappelle and H Hilfiger in both men’s and women’s wear for nearly 10 years her collection reflects just that. “Tough and chic, austerity without pretense,” says Rieman. “I design clothing for women that embodies the grace and ease that makes men’s wear so powerful.” The KAL RIEMAN Fall/Winter 2011 collection was inspired by the austere looks of the 19th Century English gentleman and the sophisticated elegance of The Dandies. The heart of the collection is the tailoring story, with suits offered in a washed wool gabardine and a wool & paper fiber glen plaid. Key styles include high collar dress shirts, washed silk tunics, knife pleated leather skirts, and fencing inspired outerwear styles. KAL RIEMAN has been featured in Women’s Wear Daily and O Magazine.

The Fall 2011 collection will be available for pre-sale and Spring 2011 for immediate purchase. The Studio Gallery is located at 2108 R Street, N.W., Washington, DC. May 17, 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Visitors are asked to RSVP to joy@kalrieman.com.

About KAL RIEMAN:

Beginning in 2009 with a small capsule collection, KAL RIEMAN has established a following of private clients and gradually expanding the collection to meet the needs of the retail environment. The KAL RIEMAN collection embodies the strength and simplicity of men’s wear in sophisticated, effortless dressing for women.

(Bravery Corporation via DC City Blog) – Bravery Corporation, a leading Washington, DC-based digital and public relations firm formerly known as 360jmg, recently launched a comprehensive re-branding campaign, along with a digitally enhanced new website, www.braverycorp.com. Bravery Corporation is a full-service agency that specializes in public relations, brand strategy and execution, digital and social media, advertising, and design.

With a diverse roster of clients, Bravery services restaurant, real estate, consumer, and government clients. Some of the firm’s current clients include Buddha-Bar, Douglas Development, Akridge, CSX, Destination DC, Chinatown Coffee Co., and DC Public Schools.

One of Bravery Corporation’s core principles is ensuring that message and strategy are tightly integrated with advanced technology. According to Bravery Corporation’s CEO Max Brown, “Technology is the driving approach in the digital age, but how all the communication pieces fit together is too often overlooked by industry professionals – usually because they don’t understand the technology available to help their clients. By combining creative messaging with technology, we provide our clients with the best solutions to help them meet their unique goals, irrespective of platform.”

Bravery Corporation’s cutting-edge website highlights the firm’s diverse capabilities, experienced staff, and past and current client work. The website features a “Brainfeed,” a real-time tool used by Bravery Corporation’s staff to post articles on industry topics, from public relations and marketing to art, design, and digital innovation. The Brainfeed links to the firm’s Twitter account, @BraveryCorp, and the Bravery Corporation Facebook page.

Additionally, Bravery Corporation’s charity-focused microsite Project Oxpeck, www.projectoxpeck.com, allows users to select and support a charity of their choice, and share this opportunity with friends via multiple new media vehicles. Through this customized annual giving program, Bravery Corporation pledges to donate to the charity that accrues the most points at the end of the year, based on the number of times their charity of choice has been shared.

Brown explains, “The mission of Project Oxpeck is to use technology to help people target philanthropy and have some fun along the way.”
