Cincinnati transplants Tanya Morgan trio is bringing Brooklynati back to East Coast after performing in their home state of Ohio. They will grace the DC 9 stage on Sunday, July 25, 2010 accompanied by another group from the Buckeye State, The Kickdrums.

This marks Tanya Morgan’s first tour after releasing several projects throughout the spring. The group’s critically lauded sophomore album,
2009’s Brooklynati earned the crew comparisons with hip hop legends. As eMusic puts it, “Brooklynati captures it exactly right here, with
breezy, jazzy tracks that have the sense of discovery that accompanied De La, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers at their most
freewheeling.” The talented trio has been getting a lot of attention from industry vets as well, receiving public nods of approval from the
likes of Questlove and Talib Kweli. Steve Smith, Time Out New York’s music editor, rated the album #1 across all genres for 2009 and said,
” This Brooklyn-Cincinnati hip-hop trio summoned old-school cheer, goofy skits and indelible hooks for a left-field masterpiece.”

With such talent, there is no doubt that this show is sure to satisfy fans eager to catch the trio live and to keep music head’s tongues wagging with approval.

The show is July 25, 2010 @ DC9 Washington, D.C. Doors: 10:30pm/Show: 11pm Tickets: 17+ $10 in advance/ $12 at the door.

(re/route via DC City Blog) – re/route productions, a new arts and cultural events presenter based in Washington, DC, will be kicking off its inaugural summer series with an appearance by one of the world’s most acclaimed hip-hop artists, Chilean MC Ana Tijoux at U Street’s LIV Nightclub on July 15, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

Hailed as “Best New Artist” by MTV Latin America and a favorite of international music tastemakers including KCRW-FM and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Tijoux’s first mainstream success came in 2007 as a guest rapper on Mexican rocker Julieta Venegas’ hit “Eres para mí”. Her U.S. debut came in March 2010 at the SXSW Festival, and she is embarking on her first North American tour in support of her new album “1977” on Nacional Records.

Featured on National Public Radio and PRI’s “The World”, the 32-year old MC eschews the bling-bling sensationalism of today’s U.S. hip-hop, drawing instead on socially-conscious 90’s influences such as Public Enemy, De La Soul, Native Tongues and her upbringing as the only child of Chilean parents exiled during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Raised in both France and Chile, Tijoux’s rhyming is a multilingual tour-de-force, flowing smoothly between French and Spanish. “Chilean hip-hop is distinct in its passion,” says Tijoux. “We don’t have so much money for the production, but the passion we have is amazing.”

Ana Tijoux (Chile)
with DTMD (DC) and Rebel Diaz (Chile)
Thursday, July 15 2010 @ 8:00pm
LIV Nightclub – 11th and U Streets, NW Washington, DC
tickets: $12 advance/$18 door buy online: www.anatijoux.eventbrite.com
more information at www.rerouteDC.com

Supporting Tijoux will be DC hip-hop favorites DTMD and another up-and-coming hip-hop, Rebel Diaz. The performance will be presented in partnership with Shine On Me.

DTMD
Supporting TIjoux on this show will be local DMV hip-hop favorites, DTMD (dunc/toine/makin/dollas). Producer Dunc and MC Toine recently released their debut album The Basics EP, along with a video for the single You which has been earning widespread critical acclaim in the hip-hop/mixtape blogosphere since the start of the year. http://duncandtoine.blogspot.com

Rebel Diaz
Fronted by Afro-Boricua MC/songstress Lah Tere, and Chilean brothers Rodstarz and G1, Rebel Diaz first performed at an immigrant rights march in New York City in 2006. With influences ranging from Dirty South bounce to South American folk, Rebel Diaz combines classic boom bap tradition with Hip Hop’s global impact.

Having been likened to a bilingual Fugees, the group’s versatility has allowed for them to share the stage with the likes of Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli, while feeling right at home with acts like Rage Against the Machine, Sergent Garcia, and Obie Bermudez. Recent tours in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Guatemala, and Chile, have only solidified their international appeal.

On the heels of their critically acclaimed Otro Guerrillero mixtape series, Rebel Diaz will release their debut full length LP in the Summer of 2010. They have spent the last two years visiting dozens of colleges and universities, facilitating workshops, speaking on panels, and performing at national conferences. Building on this growing network of positive young people in Hip Hop, the group recently opened a community arts center in the South Bronx, the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective. http://rebeldiaz.mvmt.com/

About re/route productions
New roots. Global culture. Through the production of live performance, cultural and educational events, re/route creates opportunities to witness exciting global artists rarely presented in the nation’s capital.

re/route founder and Artistic Director Jeff Parks has been producing performing arts events for over a decade, most recently in his current work as a Director of Programming with the Washington Performing Arts Society.

Says Parks, “DC is such a mix of diverse cultures and art forms, there’s a critical mass of activity happening here that includes jazz, dance music, hip-hop, and beats from around the globe. All the studies point to arts and culture being a key driver of economic activity and revitalization of our cities heading into the 21st century. What we’re looking to open up with re/route is space to play and facilitate cultural exchange – to have the same high-level, quality cultural programming and opportunities we might find in the concert hall happen organically in the city’s clubs and neighborhoods.”

About Shine on Me
Shine On Me productions is a driving force for DC hip-hop, neo-soul, jazz and dance music in the nation’s capital. Based in Washington, DC’s thriving U Street district, Shine on Me has produced hundreds of exciting events at LIV Nightclub, Bohemian Caverns, and the historic Lincoln Theater, including Little Dragon, J*Davey, DJ ?uestlove, Bilal, and many more.

(Goethe Institute via DC City Blog) – Wednesday, June 16, 2010, 7:00pm — at Washington, DC’s Goethe Institute, non-profit documentary production company Helpman Productions will present an acoustic music event and screening from their in-production film, “Musicwood.” Beer and wine will be served! And a donated high-end Gibson acoustic guitar will be raffled off. Prufrock recording artist Down Dexter will delight and amaze with a live acoustic performance.

“Musicwood” is a film about the overlogging of guitar woods in Alaska; if logging continues at the current rate, it could mean the end of the acoustic guitar as we know it. If logging practices don’t change, some estimates say they will log the last Sitka Spruce (used for acoustic guitar soundboards) in less than 5 years.

So a coalition of the world’s top guitar-makers (Martin, Taylor, Fender, Gibson) have banded together and have begun negotiations with the largest logging company in SE Alaska in the hope that they can persuade them to harvest sustainably. But it’s a tough job. The logging company is Native American owned and operated, so the situation is incredibly complex. Especially when the Government is clear cutting, right beside them in the Tongass forest.

The documentary has begun production and Helpman seeks funding to complete the film. At the Goethe Institute fundraiser, footage from the film will be screened, there will be a short presentation, Q&A (and drinks!) and there will be a raffle for a donated, high-end, acoustic guitar.

Logging companies must change the way they work — without the habitat provided by forests, countless species will face extinction. We know that without the forests’ trees to absorb carbon dioxide and transform it into oxygen our carbon emissions will skyrocket.

This fundraiser is a chance to participate in a real way in changing our world, helping to save our environment, our forests and the acoustic guitar.

Helpman Productions is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to producing documentaries that focus on areas of social, political or environmental
responsibility. By making these films, Helpman brings these issues to a larger audience, puts pressure on companies and groups to change, and helps to make a real difference in the world and its communities.

(Komen Global Race for the Cure via DC City Blog) – Now in its 21st year, the millions raised by the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® continue to make a significant year-round impact on the National Capital Area. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® announced today that based on funds raised through registration, fundraising and sponsorships, it has invested $6.5 million in grants during 2009 and 2010 to local organizations that provide vital education, outreach, screening and support services for a diverse population of people in need.

“For more than 20 years, the Komen Global Race for the Cure has celebrated area breast cancer survivors and raised funds to help underserved people in the National Capital Area,” said Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and a D.C. resident. “With need growing, our help is in demand now more than ever. Together, we can make a real impact for the people of our community.”

Each year approximately 50,000 people participate in the Komen Global Race, including nearly 4,000 survivors, by running, walking, “sleeping-in” or volunteering. Up to 75 percent of funds raised by participants, participant fundraising and sponsorships go support local education, outreach and patient/survivor support efforts. The remaining 25 percent help Komen’s work around the globe to share knowledge and experience, and to fund education and breast health services in regions where few exist. In its 20 years, the Komen Global Race in the nation’s capital has resulted in more than $24 million in grants to local organizations. This is part of the more than $1.5 billion for research and community programs Komen has invested globally since its inception in 1982.

Komen’s National Capital Area investments are focused on three specific priorities:

Removing cultural, linguistic and physical barriers that women face throughout the entire continuum of breast health care;

Increasing access to breast health information and services to women living in neighborhoods with high poverty rates; and

Engaging the faith community in ensuring the delivery of culturally competent breast health information and services.

The 2010 Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® is scheduled for June 5, 2010, on the National Mall. For more information, including how to register to help make a difference, visit www.globalraceforthecure.org or call 703-416-RACE (7223).
